Mechanical Engineering Technologist - Red Deer

Position Summary:

The Mechanical Engineering Technologist will be responsible for designing, assembling, and conducting testing on various mechanical assemblies related to valves, meters and instrumentation. Responsible for analyzing potential technological advancements through the research and development process. Will be responsible for improving and developing work instructions and process flows to control product conformity.

What your responsibilities will be:

  • Take direction and fulfil responsibilities from the Manufacturing Manager.

  • Completing code calculations and using mechanical engineering principles to determine material strength.

  • Assembling manufactured and repaired products to manufacturers and or code specifications.

  • Completing drawings by use of 2D AutoCad and 3D Solidworks.

  • Completing design submissions and design packages for code compliance.

  • Properly sizing valves and meters.

  • Offering automated valve and control solutions as needed.

  • Initiating and maintaining job packages (as applicable) with all required documentation.

  • Conducting research and development to improve product.

  • Communicating with customers – telephone, email, virtual/in-person meetings and presentations.

  • Diagnosing and troubleshooting mechanical issues.

  • Proposing off the shelf and custom solutions for clients.

  • Quoting as needed, especially where custom solutions are proposed.

  • Completing inspection and verification.

  • Approval of Material Test Reports for material receiving.

  • Maintaining traceability of product through varying stages.

  • Document control for QC packages – weld mapping, hydro test records, welding records, dimensional check records and so forth

  • Performing in process inspections as required.

  • Finalizing and developing work instructions, forms, and procedures for varying product lines.

  • Ensuring that only calibrated tools and equipment are used in assembly and testing process.

  • Preparing test equipment for pressure testing ensuring pressure test equipment meets design requirements as outlined in Kings Inspection and Testing Procedure.

  • Initiate Nonconformance reports where product or services do not meet requirements

  • Assist reporting personnel in QHSE processes and completing QHSE records

  • Demonstrate and emphasize safety conscious attitude

Your passion will be sparked by:

  • A high degree of mechanical aptitude and willingness to take a hands on approach to product development

  • Previous experience in inside sales, service writing, shipping and receiving, inventory, administration, etc.

  • Basic computer skills; Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook), Solidworks

  • An ability to work in a fast paced, team environment.

  • Having a keen attention to accuracy and detail.

  • The ability and willingness to learn and adjust to changing priorities and focus.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • A positive and enthusiastic attitude.

  • Possessing good communication and organizational skills.

What we are looking for in our next team member:

  • Completion of a recognized Mechanical Engineering Technologist program

  • 1-2 years of experience in pressure design

  • Previous experience with Solidworks is considered an asset

  • Related experience and knowledge

  • Able to lift 50 lbs.

  • A valid driver’s license

  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug test

Your working environment:

  • Monday to Friday 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM

  • Yearly holiday office closures

  • Office / Shop Environment (Steel-toed boots required)

  • Fast-paced with frequent interruptions – phone calls, emails, internal office flow.

  • Frequent remote video communications and training from head office.

  • During busy times, overtime maybe expected.
